I Wasn't a Believer — Until I Stepped Onboard a True Luxury River Cruise Ship

I Thought Uniworld Boutique River Cruises Was Not for Me. I Was Wrong.
I'll be honest with you. Before I attended the 2026 ASTA River Cruise Expo in Amsterdam, I wasn't a Uniworld superfan. I knew the brand. I'd booked them. But I hadn't felt it. Then I walked onboard the S.S. Emile, their newest ship and that was it. I was hooked!
So if you've also wondered what Uniworld Boutique Cruise is all about, read more now and check out my stateroom tour videos.

Not a Cruise Ship. A Floating Boutique Hotel.
One of the first things that caught my attention at the expo was Uniworld’s commitment to intimacy. Unlike massive cruise ships that carry thousands and even other river cruise lines who carry up to 190 travelers, Uniworld’s ships accommodate between 120 and 154 passengers. This smaller scale creates a cozy atmosphere that feels more like a private retreat than a floating hotel.
This size means fewer crowds, more personalized service, and a chance to connect with fellow travelers and crew. Fewer people also mean more space. That's more space in the cabins and more space in the common areas.
Each of their 13 ships are different, all based on different themes. Until this year, the decor all reflected the region the ship sailed but now the newer ships are have inspiration for different artists. Not only is every ship different but no two suites on a ship are the same.
Why Uniworld? Because the Difference Is in the Details
And the details go beyond the ships.
The Crew: Here's what separates a truly exceptional travel experience from one that simply looks good on paper: the people. Uniworld's crew are not contractors brought in seasonally and shuffled between ships. They are direct employees and they stay. The average staff tenure is eight years, which in the hospitality industry is almost unheard of.
What that means for you as a guest is a crew that has genuinely mastered their craft, knows the ships and itineraries inside and out, and shows up every single day because they chose to be there. Add to that one of the highest staff-to-guest ratios in river cruising, and the result is service that feels personal rather than performed. They will learn your name, remember what you drink, and anticipate what you need before you ask. That is not a marketing promise — it is the direct result of hiring well, treating people well, and keeping them.

Culinary: The same philosophy carries into every meal. Uniworld's culinary team sources food within 100 miles of wherever the ship is sailing which means the produce on your plate in Bordeaux came from the region you're exploring that day.
Here, regional wines rule. No generic house pours. Local specialties sit alongside familiar favorites so no one goes without, but the emphasis is always on what's fresh, what's local, and what tells the story of where you are. That commitment to sourcing has also earned Uniworld recognition for sustainability practices across their fleet.
Fitness Center and Spa The fitness center on the S.S. Emily impressed me. It was as thoughtfully designed as everything onboard. First, the treadmills are sunken into the floor which sounds like a small detail until you realize it means you can look straight out at the river while you run. Small but impactful detail.
The spa offers facials, massages, and treatments and on several ships it's connected to an indoor pool, so it flows naturally as a pre-treatment lounge. As river cruising attracts a younger, more active demographic, Uniworld has clearly been paying attention.

Self-Serve Laundry: This was one of my favorite finds! I know, I know, not so glamorous but if you've ever packed for a 10 days in Europe and tried to keep everything fresh, then you understand why this matters.
Complimentary self-serve laundry is included, which means you can pack lighter, stay longer, and never spend a precious port day hunting down a dry cleaner. It's one of those quietly brilliant touches that makes the whole trip easier. I swear by a mid trip laundry day!
The Artistic Design of the New Super Ships
Among the ships at the Expo, the S.S. Emilie stood out for its stunning artistic inspiration. The ship’s design draws from the work of Gustav Klimt, the Austrian symbolist painter known for his intricate patterns and golden hues. Walking through the S.S. Emilie feels like stepping into a moving art gallery.
Every detail from the lobby’s elegant mosaics to the cabin décor reflects Klimt’s style. This artistic approach creates a warm, luxurious environment that feels unique and carefully curated. It’s not just a place to sleep; it’s a space that invites you to appreciate beauty throughout your journey.

A Note on the New Ships: Plus the S.S. Audrey and S.S. Marlena to Debut in 2027
As you can see, the S.S. Emilie is stunning! And knowing that the S.S. Marlena (Art Deco, inspired by Marlene Dietrich) and the S.S. Audrey (mid-century modern, inspired by Audrey Hepburn) are both arriving in 2027 makes this an extraordinarily exciting time to be booking Uniworld.
While other river cruise lines are adding more and more ships, the Uniworld fleet will stay intentionally small (around 13 ships) because boutique is the entire point. More ships would mean more passengers, and more passengers would mean less of everything that makes Uniworld what it is.
Uniworld is not resting on its laurels. The upcoming S.S. Audrey, named after Audrey Hepburn, promises to bring a fresh aesthetic with its mid-century modern design.

This style emphasizes clean lines, natural materials, and a timeless elegance that appeals to lovers of classic design.
The S.S. Audrey will continue Uniworld’s tradition of blending comfort with artistry, offering guests a stylish and inviting atmosphere.
Truly All-Inclusive — And I Mean It. How Uniworld Creates a Boutique Hotel Experience on Water
Here's where I get passionate, because this matters more than people realize when comparing river cruise lines.
Uniworld is genuinely all-inclusive. Not "house wine at dinner" all-inclusive. Not "beverage package optional" all-inclusive. I'm talking premium spirits, fine wines, cocktails — whatever you want, any time of day. All day. That level of inclusivity is rare, and it's one of the reasons the value is so strong when you actually do the math.
Here's what's wrapped into your fare:
All onboard gratuities completely covered (saves you 7–10 euros per person, per day compared to other lines)
Two to three included excursions daily, tailored to different fitness levels and interests
Farm-to-table cuisine sourced within 100 miles of the ship, with regional wines at every meal
Fine dining moving toward fully plated service (no more buffets - this reduces food waste too)
24-hour room service, complimentary laundry, and butler service in suites
Exclusive after-hours access to iconic venues: the Vienna Art History Museum, St. Mark's Basilica, and Les Bassins de Lumière in Bordeaux. These aren't extras. They're included. That is the Uniworld difference.
"Not all house 'wine at dinner' all-inclusive. I'm talking premium spirits, fine wines, cocktails and mocktails — whatever you want, any time of day."
So Who Is Uniworld For?
The sweet spot is adults 40–70 who are curious about the world, appreciate quality and service, and want a stress-free, deeply immersive experience. But even within that, the range is wide.
Here are four segments that are hot right now:
Solo Travelers: Uniworld frequently waives or significantly reduces single supplements on select sailings. If you've hesitated about river cruising because of the solo cost, this changes the conversation completely.
Multigenerational Families: Children 5 and older are welcome on European sailings, and Generations sailings are purpose-built for families — dedicated youth hosts, tailored activities, and connecting cabin options exceeding 600 square feet combined. An easy yes for the family reunion or grandparent trip.
Wine Enthusiasts: Bordeaux, Burgundy, Provence, the Douro River Valley. Onboard sommeliers and regional wines at every meal. If wine is your passion, Uniworld has an itinerary built around it.
The "I've Done Everything" Traveler: Exclusive after-hours museum visits, private dining rooms, retro sidecar tours at sunset, and exotic sailings through the Venice Lagoon, Egypt, Vietnam, Peru, and the Amazon — Uniworld reaches the traveler who thinks they've seen it all.
A Big Moment: Luxury Gold Joins the Family in 2027
This is news worth paying attention to if you want more than just a river cruise. Beginning in 2027, Luxury Gold, their premier land tour brand, fully integrates into Uniworld. What this means is a single brand offering luxury river cruising, private luxury rail experiences, and curated land tours across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and beyond.
No other competitor can offer that combination under one seamless luxury umbrella. We're talking exclusive behind-the-scenes access to iconic five-star properties - all with the same Uniworld signature.
Think Paris to Edinburgh by cruise and coach. The Douro River Valley paired with Madrid, Granada, and Seville. The Venice Lagoon cruise combined with the Dolomites. This is what's coming, and it is exciting!
