AmaWaterways River Cruises: An Advisor's Guide
I'm Cyndi Smith, an AmaWaterways-certified travel advisor in Overland Park, Kansas. AmaWaterways is the river cruise line I recommend most often to empty nesters, retirees, and families traveling across generations, because it pairs real luxury with a relaxed pace and excellent food and wine.

My take on AmaWaterways
My first AmaWaterways cruise was a Taste of Christmas sailing on the Rhine aboard the AmaSofia. I chose the Rhine for my first European river cruise because it packs so much into one week: Dutch, German, French and Swiss culture, fairytale castles, and a new touwn to explore every day.
The the most striking feature onboard is the crew. My daughter was the youngest guest on board, just 10 years old at the time, and they treated her like a princess all week. She had food allergies, and the kitchen took them seriously from the first meal to the last, so I could relax at dinner.
And every dinner was a highlight. Every night felt like a wine dinner, with several courses inspired by the region we were sailing through and local wines chosen to match. As a certified sommelier, I loved that touch. For less adventurous eaters (like my daughter), there were always classics too, like steak frites, pizza, or pasta. Celebrating our last night onboard at the Chef's Table for an exclusive chef's tasting menu was such a treat!
What surprised me the most was how much I enjoyed hanging out on the ship in the evening. After a busy day of touring or biking, it quick became our routine to meet up with other guests for the "Sip & Sail" happy hour before dinner and meet back up for the evening entertainment.

Choosing your ship and stateroom
Not all Ama ships are alike, and the ship matters as much as the river.

AmaWaterways features twin-balcony which staterooms give you a French balcony (inside) and a full outdoor balcony. They're my favorite category for couples.

AmaMagna is double the width of a typical river ship, with more restaurants and larger suites. Its sister ship, AmaRudi, arrives on the Danube in 2027.

Suites are worth it on longer sailings or milestone trips.

Lower-deck staterooms with fixed windows are the best value if you plan to be out exploring most of the day

Some ships have a staterooms that accommodate triple occupancy as well as solo only cabins.
How much walking is involved?
Most tours are walking tours through historic town centers, with cobblestones and some stairs. AmaWaterways offers three activity levels on many tours, including a gentle walkers group that moves at a slower pace.
If mobility is a concern, tell me before we choose a ship. Some ships raft alongside others in port, which can mean crossing another ship to get ashore. I'll help you pick the itinerary, cabin location, and tours that work for you.

Danube: Budapest to Vilshofen (or vice versa). The classic first river cruise. Vienna, the Wachau Valley, and grand capitals. Read our recent blog post on sailing the Danube.
